Hop-Syn’s Manufacturing Process Makes the Difference

roll-on-calenderNot all synthetic papers are created equal. In fact, one of the differentiating factors of Hop-Syn synthetic paper is its manufacturing process. It’s the only synthetic paper company in the market to use a calendering process to manufacture its product line. Calendering delivers the tightest tolerance for gauge control and uniformity, resulting in higher quality materials.

Unlike die extrusion or blown film extrusion used by other synthetic paper manufacturers, the Hop-Syn calendering process can produce a more uniform gauge control of +/- 5%. This allows flexo and offset printers to print Hop-Syn synthetic paper at faster speeds for higher production and a more consistent print image. The Hop-Syn paper line can be made in a variety of thicknesses from .003 up to .035 gauge, and maximum roll width of up to 72″.

Throughout multiple stages of the manufacturing process, steel rollers are used to shape the raw material of the Hop-Syn paper into the narrow- and wide-format rolls. Calender rollers subject the Hop-Syn synthetic paper material, in its semi-molten state, to thousands of pounds of pressure and heat per square inch. It’s at this stage that the paper gauge is measured.

A second set of rollers emboss a smooth matte finish when it passes through matte-engraved stainless steel rollers, pressed against matte rubber pressure rollers. arrow-in-calenderHop-Syn’s calendering process ensures an optimum profile so that the caliper of the synthetic paper remains uniform.

Hop-Syn synthetic papers are made into a variety of paper grades, which is formulated with CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and Tio2 (Titanium dioxide) added to the base of polypropylene resin. Although the facestock may look similar in finish, the properties of each Hop-Syn grade vary in opacity, brightness, tensile strength and elongation. This makes the synthetic papers adaptable to different applications, which is why the papers are referred to as “The Application Synthetic Paper.”

The synthetic papers are 100% recyclable, waterproof, tear resistant, and temperature resistant from -60°F to 220°F. The Hop-Syn papers are ideal for multiple printing processes including offset litho, UV offset, flexo, screen, UV inkjet or thermal transfer.
