For retailers and the printing community, the holiday season starts early. When most people are celebrating Independence Day, big brands and their print buyers are putting together their holiday POP displays and signage. Printer partners start scheduling the jobs, and the Hop-Syn synthetic paper gets prepped for printing. It’s within this realm that the industry’s wish lists are met: quality, low-cost, turnaround, and sustainability. The Hop-Syn synthetic papers fulfills these wishes, and then some.

We’ve become established as the go-to substrate for big brands, and it’s a recognition that we uphold each day, and with each customer we serve.”

Standards of Excellence

Hop-Syn satisfies the industry’s wish list for a number of reasons. Its synthetic papers are 100% recyclable and produced under ISO 9000 standards. Hop is the only synthetic paper company in the market to use a calendering process in its manufacturing. This process delivers higher quality materials with the tightest tolerance for gauge control and uniformity.

The Hop-Syn substrate also comes in largest variety of grades, including BL for backlighting, TO for high opacity, and XT for durability. Hop-Syn is also available in the G1, G2, and DL grades for easy folding, massive thickness, the brightest white surface, respectively. The Hop-Syn papers can be printed on multiple printing processes including offset litho, UV offset, flexo, screen, UV inkjet or thermal transfer.

One of the top reasons that the Hop-Syn synthetic papers fulfill the industry’s wish lists, however, are its people. Knowledgeable, helpful, and readily available, the Hop-Syn team is a stand out amongst the rest. The staff welcomes calls from anyone with questions about their next printing project.

“We do more than just sell a substrate, we help to find solutions.” – William Latham

“We do more than just sell a substrate, we help to find solutions,” comments William Latham, Senior Account Representative for Hop Industries. At the recent Pack Expo, Latham helped to connect an attendee with a printer for their blister packaging needs. “It’s rewarding when we are able to help new customers find a printer that meets their specific print needs.”

Solutions based on Applications

Because there are several options for printing on Hop-Syn synthetic papers, the Hop team is readily available for advice and recommendations. For example, for packaging and anti-theft and applications, the Hop team recommends the G2 and XT synthetic paper grades. The team can help customers select the ideal thickness and facilitate in-house customized converting to ensure the papers meet the project’s specific requirements.

For rugged applications, the XT grade is the banner vinyl alternative. But not in all cases, such as extreme weather conditions. And this is when a quick call to the Hop-Syn representative is invaluable to determine when and where the XT grade should be used. Rule of thumb is that unless hurricane-weather resistance is required, Hop-Syn XT is a more sound alternative to banner vinyl because it’s free of plasticizers and phthalates, and can be printed with a sharper dot gain and with higher color resolution than the heavily embossed vinyl.

The Hop-Syn team can provide expert advice for a range of print projects, from point of purchase displays, signs and banners, to backlit promotions, fine art, transit displays, and more. Whether using flexography, litho, screen, UV inkjet or thermal transfer printing processes, contact a Hop-Syn associate for advice on any print project. The team is based out of Lyndhurst, NJ office. bus-shelter-carnivalSometimes great vacations get their start from just an idea, and in most major cities, the seeds are planted in the least obvious places: transit stops and bus shelters. Ad agencies know that it’s here that the hints of sunny destinations can capture the attention of future tourists as they start and end their workdays. Agencies also know that the eye-catching ads have to work double duty. Day and night — illuminated or not — under all weather conditions, they must appeal to the masses. For demanding applications like this, designers turn to Hop-Syn synthetic paper BL grade for their backlit signage.

Hop-Syn BL is #1 Choice for Backlit Displays

Ad agencies, print buyers and printers all agree that Hop-Syn BL is the choice for backlit point of purchase signs and displays. In comparison to the alternate options, which are detrimental to the environment, the 100% recyclable Hop-Syn BL grade is a must for brands with sustainability mandates.

More than an eco-friendly alternative, Hop-Syn BL synthetic paper grade meets the highest standards in the backlit sign industry. The white, translucent polypropylene sheet is weather resistant and UV-durable. In comparison to alternate backlit substrate options, the Hop-Syn BL grade boasts a higher dyne level, heat resistance, and both uniform pigment dispersion and gauge tolerance. It’s micro-porous surface allows the printed image to be more scuff resistant.

When to use Hop-Syn BL

bus-shelter-sunglassesAdvertising or promotions that are illuminated should be printed on the Hop-Syn BL substrate. In the daylight, the Hop-Syn BL grade displays high quality images, and when backlit, it illuminates a brilliant color display. Other uses for Hop-Syn BL include menu boards, retail store or fine art displays,

Commercial printers appreciate the easy printability of the synthetic paper substrate, and its flexibility for all printing process including offset, flexo, screen, thermal transfer, UV or LED inkjet. It’s anti-static surface facilitates material handling and processing.

roll-on-calenderNot all synthetic papers are created equal. In fact, one of the differentiating factors of Hop-Syn synthetic paper is its manufacturing process. It’s the only synthetic paper company in the market to use a calendering process to manufacture its product line. Calendering delivers the tightest tolerance for gauge control and uniformity, resulting in higher quality materials.

[spacer height=”25px”]Uniformity Equals Faster Print Speeds

Unlike die extrusion or blown film extrusion used by other synthetic paper manufacturers, the Hop-Syn calendering process can produce a more uniform gauge control of +/- 5%. This allows flexo and offset printers to print Hop-Syn synthetic paper at faster speeds for higher production and a more consistent print image. The Hop-Syn paper line can be made in a variety of thicknesses from .003 up to .035 gauge, and maximum roll width of up to 72″.

[spacer height=”25px”]How it Works

Throughout multiple stages of the manufacturing process, steel rollers are used to shape the raw material of the Hop-Syn paper into the narrow- and wide-format rolls. Calender rollers subject the Hop-Syn synthetic paper material, in its semi-molten state, to thousands of pounds of pressure and heat per square inch. It’s at this stage that the paper gauge is measured.

A second set of rollers emboss a smooth matte finish when it passes through matte-engraved stainless steel rollers, pressed against matte rubber pressure rollers. arrow-in-calenderHop-Syn’s calendering process ensures an optimum profile so that the caliper of the synthetic paper remains uniform.

Hop-Syn synthetic papers are made into a variety of paper grades, which is formulated with CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and Tio2 (Titanium dioxide) added to the base of polypropylene resin. Although the facestock may look similar in finish, the properties of each Hop-Syn grade vary in opacity, brightness, tensile strength and elongation. This makes the synthetic papers adaptable to different applications, which is why the papers are referred to as “The Application Synthetic Paper.”

[spacer height=”20px”]The Hop-Syn synthetic papers are produced under ISO 9000 standards, and meet U.S. government printing office JCP-090 specifications. The synthetic papers are 100% recyclable, waterproof, tear resistant, and temperature resistant from -60°F to 220°F. The Hop-Syn papers are ideal for multiple printing processes including offset litho, UV offset, flexo, screen, UV inkjet or thermal transfer.

Retailers of all sizes are fighting “unknown shrinkage.” For companies like Walmart, theft is forcing them to claim significant losses of approximately $3 billion annually (1% of its revenue.) To solve this challenge, retailers are using synthetic paper substrates to create more clever deterrents, while staying true to their sustainability initiatives.

[spacer height=”25px”]Hop-Syn Synthetic Paper for Anti-Theft Packaging

img_4060

The sheer durability of Hop-Syn G2 and XT synthetic paper grades make it ideal for anti-theft product packaging, especially for manufacturers that are selling expensive merchandise over the counter where the packaging necessitates extra tear resistance to prevent it from being tampered with before purchasing.

[spacer height=”20px”]The Hop-Syn G2 and XT synthetic paper grades also eliminate the need for excessive packaging typically found with blister packaging and clamshell designs. In fact, retailers can stock up to 75% more products in a pegboard display when using Hop-Syn synthetic papers versus clamshells.

[spacer height=”25px”]Multiple Paper Grade Options

The Hop-Syn G2 grade is the heaviest gauge in the market today, and the XT grade boasts extreme tear resistance. Both grades offer a high dyne level and smooth matte finish that deliver excellent printability on both sides, so graphics can pop. Hop-Syn synthetic papers are environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable as a polypropylene plastic, under code #5.

[spacer height=”20px”]Hop-Syn synthetic paper is made to stand the test of time. Easily die-cut without compromising its tear resistant properties, Hop-Syn synthetic paper can also be used with hot-melt and PUR glues to create a permanent bond that makes any package more tamper resistant. Its clay-filled, single layered construction is also waterproof and UV-resistant from discoloring under direct sunlight. This prevents the printed image and text from warping, scuffing or fading during the packaging, shipping, and storage process.

[spacer height=”20px”]Hop-Syn synthetic paper is an ideal substrate for anti-theft packaging because it has the look and feel of paper, but can withstand extreme temperature and weather conditions. This allows the synthetic paper to be used for indoor and outdoor applications, where the quality of the printed image and packaging are not compromised. These are just some of the reasons why retailers use it for their packaging.

[spacer height=”25px”]Glue Sticks to Hop-Syn

rfidSometimes anti-theft radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and other tracking tools are more effective when they are fully concealed. In cases like this, manufacturers use the Hop-Syn XT paper, especially for its tear resistant qualities, to enclose, seal, and prevent RFID tracking devices from being detected.

[spacer height=”20px”]Based on Hop-Syn’s unique composition of polypropylene and calcium carbonate, the Hop-Syn synthetic paper can withstand extreme temperatures — from -40 F up to 220 F. It does not distort or warp during the hot melt gluing process, and its integrity also helps to protect the RFID tag and package throughout the lifecycle of the product.

Retailers have a choice when it comes to their in-store signage, flower-signbut some habits are hard to break. For decades, banner vinyl reigned as the go-to substrate for durable displays, but as each sign goes up, so does the cost to the environment. To solve this dilemma, retailers and their print partners are making the calculated decision to use Hop-Syn synthetic paper, which boasts a similar look and feel to vinyl, without the environmental damage, and is 100% recyclable.

What’s So Bad About Banner Vinyl?

Vinyl, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), is a very common plastic material. The versatile plastic is used in countless formulations and configurations -- vinyl banners and labels are just two of the thousands. The most notable problems with banner vinyl are attributed to the production and disposal of it. Vinyl requires the input of toxic, raw chemicals including chlorine and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), ethylene dichloride (EDC), and mercury. These are highly-polluting and cancer-causing, releasing carcinogenic chlorinated dioxines, which bio-accumulate throughout the food chain and pollute groundwater. Other by-products, including phthalates, lead, cadmium, tin and other chemicals, are released during the lifecycle of vinyl.

The Hop-Syn Alternative to Banner Vinyl Signage

Corporate sustainability requirements are mandating that retailers grocery-storeimplement environmentally-friendly solutions, and retailers are choosing Hop-Syn synthetic paper as their vinyl alternative. Based on its polypropylene composition, Hop-Syn is 100% recyclable under recycling code #5. The synthetic papers come in a variety of options, from backlit or block-out window posters to weather-resistant displays and banners. The papers are temperature and extra-tear resistant, and available for two-sided printing of point of purchase signs and displays.

Retailers use Hop-Syn TO paper grade based on its high opacity for two-sided printing. The grade can be sewn or grommeted and is extremely tear resistant, with excellent UV resistance properties -- up to 1-year outdoors, without yellowing.

Hop-Syn XT is an extra tear-resistant synthetic paper, with bright opacity up to 94%. Due to its high dyne level, it offers excellent printability and is ideal for print promotions that will used in the most demanding environmental conditions.

Making the Switch to the Hop-Syn Vinyl Alternative

Competitively priced to vinyl, Hop-Syn synthetic papers meet the growing requirement for sustainability that corporations are rightfully imposing on their brick-and-mortars. As a result, more print partners are stocking Hop-Syn synthetic papers to ensure the quick turnaround of their clients’ print projects.

Hop Industries, the makers of Hop-Snn synthetic papers, stocks over one million pounds of inventory in its NJ warehouse, and can guarantee to ship from a large inventory of stock sheets, within 24-hours.

To ensure that print partners use the Hop-Syn synthetic papers, retailers are also specifying it. This added step is necessary to confirm that with each project, they are meeting their corporate requirements for sustainability.

In-House Converting Serves a Variety of Applicationsbanner-in-window-display

Hop offers in-house converting capabilities, giving retailers the opportunity to choose from large format sheets up to 60 x 83 inches, rewound rolls from 38-inches up to 62-inches in width, and narrow-width rolls as small as 3-inches in width, to service a wide variety of printers and applications. Hop-Syn’s custom converted paper is available within 3-days from the order date.
